About the project

THERESA PCP is a European initiative tackling one of today’s most pressing challenges: hospital wastewater pollution and antimicrobial resistance. Current urban treatment plants are unable to effectively remove many of the pharmaceuticals, pathogens, and hazardous substances discharged by hospitals. This leads to contamination of rivers, drinking water, food chains, and the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes — a global health threat.
THERESA PCP will launch a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process to stimulate the development of innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective on-site treatment systems for hospital wastewater. These solutions will target cytostatic drugs, X-ray contrast agents, antibiotics, and resistant microorganisms, helping protect ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health.
The project is bringing together a strong consortium of hospitals, research centres, non-profits, and procurement experts across Europe. Together, we aim to set new standards for greener, safer, and more resilient healthcare infrastructures.
